Welcome to SC Out of Their Hands

Information to help parents and community members keep alcohol out of the hands of underage youth

Keep alcohol out of their hands this SUMMER!

Start the Conversation Early: Engage your children in discussions about the dangers of underage drinking. Regardless of their age, it's crucial to set clear expectations and boundaries regarding alcohol consumption. Open dialogues can help them navigate peer pressure and make safe choices during summer festivities.

Supervise Vacation Gatherings: If hosting a party, ensure that alcoholic beverages are only available to adults. Lock away any alcohol not being served and frequently check in with younger guests to maintain a safe environment. This supervision can deter underage drinking and promote responsible behavior.

Encourage Alcohol-Free Alternatives: Highlight the fun of parties without alcohol. Provide a variety of non-alcoholic beverages and engaging activities that do not center around drinking. This approach helps teens enjoy celebrations while steering clear of alcohol.

Did You Know? The 100 Days Between Memorial Day and Labor Day Are the Deadliest of the Year

When school is out and teens are more likely to be on the road—crash rates sharply increase. Many of these crashes involve risky behaviors like speeding, distracted driving, or driving under the influence.

Together, we can change that. By promoting a culture of safety and shared responsibility, we can help protect young drivers and their communities.

Parents, your role is powerful. Talk to your teen about the risks. Set clear expectations. And most importantly, model safe driving every time you get behind the wheel. The habits they learn from you can save lives.

Noteworthy Updates - New South Carolina Law

On May 19, 2025, the Tort Reform and Liquor Liability bill (H. 3430) officially went into effect in South Carolina.

How does this impact youth across the state?

Under this new law, all merchants that serve alcoholic beverages for on-premises consumption are required to complete a certified alcohol server training program. These trainings must include:

▸How to identify and refuse service to anyone under 21 or visibly intoxicated

How to properly check IDs and spot fake identification

This proactive measure strengthens accountability among alcohol-serving establishments and reinforces South Carolina’s commitment to youth safety.
